I live in Texas. I have built a life here, contributed here, paid taxes here, and like countless other Indians, I believed Texas was a place where hard work mattered more than where you came from. But recently, something feels different. There is an ugliness that has become louder, more public, and more aggressive. What many people dismiss as “online trolling” or isolated incidents is starting to feel like something much deeper. As an Indian living in Texas, I am watching anti-Indian racism and Hinduphobia rise in ways that should concern everyone. And no, this is not exaggeration. This is becoming a pattern. Indian children are being targeted in schools and public spaces. Hindu families are being mocked for their traditions. Delivery workers are being harassed. Immigrants are being blamed for economic issues they did not create. And now political extremists are openly fantasizing about removing Indians from Texas altogether. How did we get here?
Hindu students have already faced bullying in Texas
This is not new. Years ago, the Houston Chronicle reported the story of a Hindu student in Texas who faced repeated bullying because of his faith. He was mocked by classmates who called Hindu practices “weird” and treated his beliefs as something laughable. His family had to watch him struggle simply because he was a Hindu. That article should have been a wake up call. Instead, things appear to be getting worse. The Houston Chronicle highlighted how Hindu students had to navigate ignorance and bullying simply because their religion was different. That is Hinduphobia. Not criticism. Not debate. Bullying children because of their faith.
Indian-American boy assaulted in Texas school
A video that recently circulated widely showed an Indian-American boy being physically bullied at a Texas school. He was reportedly choked and pushed while other students watched. The video sparked outrage online because many people saw what it represented. This was not just school bullying. People saw racial targeting. An Indian child was humiliated while others stood around recording. Imagine being that child. Imagine being his parents. Imagine sending your kid to school and wondering whether they’ll come home traumatized because someone decided their skin color made them a target.
Indian children are being harassed in public parks
This is something many families are quietly talking about. Children of Indian origin are being mocked in parks and neighborhoods. They are being called “foreigners.” People make fun of their accents. They mock their mother tongue. They target darker skin. Parents are increasingly worried because this behavior is becoming normalized. Children should not have to defend their identity while playing in a public park.
Even Indian delivery workers are being targeted
It doesn’t stop with children. Indian delivery drivers and workers are also increasingly reporting harassment. These are people working long hours trying to earn an honest living. Yet some are being verbally abused simply because they are Indian. Many immigrants work jobs that keep everyday life functioning. They deserve dignity, not harassment.
The H1B visa backlash has made things worse
The recent anger surrounding H1B workers has intensified anti-Indian rhetoric. Indians are being blamed for job shortages. They are being accused of “stealing jobs.” Now there are also accusations involving housing fraud and economic manipulation being thrown around online without evidence. Entire communities are being blamed for larger economic frustrations. This rhetoric is dangerous because it turns ordinary families into scapegoats. Most Indian immigrants came here legally. They work in healthcare, engineering, education, trucking, hospitality, retail, and technology. They contribute to Texas every single day.
Chhath Puja backlash and attacks on Governor Greg Abbott
When Texas Governor Greg Abbott publicly supported the Indian community after backlash over Chhath Puja celebrations, he made it clear that Texas should remain welcoming. He said: “As long as I am governor of this great state, Texas will be a land for the Indian community.” That statement should not have been controversial. But what happened next was disturbing. Racist individuals flooded online spaces attacking him. They used slurs. They used vulgar language. They threatened him. Why? Because he refused to join anti-Indian hate. That reaction revealed how deeply some people resent the growing Indian community in Texas.
The rise of extremist online figures
And then there are figures like Kelly Smith. She is running as a write-in candidate for governor in Texas and creates YouTube and Instagram content from a basement with a Texas flag behind her while openly showing her assets to attract attention and build an audience. People can interpret that however they want. But what is deeply concerning is the anti-Indian rhetoric being amplified in these spaces. These individuals appear obsessed with removing Indians from Texas, taking over Indian jobs and businesses through intimidation, and creating chaos through hate-driven narratives. Many of these individuals appear deeply unstable, unemployed, addicted, extremist, or involved in deeply troubling behavior, yet they are trying to influence public discourse through rage-driven content. That should alarm everyone.
Indians are the second-largest immigrant community in Texas
The Indian community has helped build modern Texas. Doctors. Engineers. Hotel owners. Small business operators. Truck drivers. Teachers. Students. Entrepreneurs. Taxpayers. Families. Yet some people act as if Indians are invaders. We are not. We are part of Texas. And many Hindu families have spent decades building stable communities here. So why are people trying so hard to make them feel unsafe?
What future do Hindus have in Texas?
That is the question many families are quietly asking right now. Will our children be safe in schools? Will our traditions be respected? Will our parents be safe in public? Will immigrants be blamed when the economy falters? Indians have prospered in Texas because most Americans are good people, about 90 percent, and their goodwill helped us succeed. But hate and Hinduphobia are growing louder, and pretending otherwise makes things worse. Texas must not let extremists define the state. The future should not be built on fear, exclusion, or hatred, and Indians should not have to prove they deserve basic dignity.
