What is the significance of Rangoli?
Rangoli is a Sanskrit word meaning "rows of colors." It is not just a mere decoration. It is a practice designed to welcome deities, bring good fortune to the household, and foster a sense of community and artistic expression, especially during festivals like Diwali, Onam, and Pongal. References were found in the Puranas and other scriptures. According to a legend recorded in Chitra Lakshana, the earliest treatise on Indian art, a king and his realm were deeply grieved by the death of the high priest's son. Everyone, including the king, appealed to Lord Brahma (the creator of the Universe), who, moved by the petitions, asked the king to paint a representation of the kid on the floor so he could revive it. And with that, the specialty of floor art sprang up. What's more, that is how rice, flour, and blossoms were transformed into pleasant offerings to God as floor art called Rangoli.
People usually draw or paint it in front of their homes using different colors, primarily during major festivals like Diwali, also known as the ‘Festival of Lights'. Rangolis are believed to welcome Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, as per Indian mythology. They are also believed to keep evil spirits at bay.
