Modern Indian Spiritual Inspiration – Swami Vivekananda Jayanti
Swami Vivekananda is the great sage who introduced Indian spirituality and the universality of Hinduism to the world. We celebrate his birth anniversary as 'National Youth Day'. His teachings, which state, "If you think of yourself as weak, you will become weak; if you think of yourself as strong, you will become strong," remain a compass for youth today. It is not merely spirituality but a way of life that integrates social well-being, nationalism, and self-cultivation.
Childhood intelligence and curiosity: Narendra was born on January 12, 1863, in Calcutta to Vishwanath Dutta and Bhuvaneshwari Devi. From childhood, he had an inquisitive mind that asked, "Why? What?" Narendra, who excelled in music and gymnastics along with his studies, was a boy with extraordinary concentration. Once, while returning the books he had borrowed from the library in a single day, a suspicious librarian asked him questions, and he answered them without hesitation, thereby demonstrating his 'child genius'.
Facing fear: Once, monkeys chased Vivekananda in Varanasi. While he was running away in fear, a monk came across him and said, "Don't run. Face them!" As soon as Swamiji turned around and stood up bravely, the monkeys fled. Through this incident, he taught us that "one should not run away from problems in life and be afraid, but face them bravely."
Maternal devotion and selflessness: Before going abroad, Vivekananda sought his mother's permission. She asked him, "Narendra! Give me that monkey here," to test him. Narendra held the knife's sharp end in his hand and handed the handle to his mother. Seeing that, she said, "You can go to the welfare of the world." Because she realized that he had the selfless quality of not caring about the hardships involved in doing good for others.
Vivekananda as a world conqueror: His quest for the existence of God led him to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. In 1893, he introduced Vedanta to the Western world at the World's Parliament of Religions, held in Chicago, America. There, as he began his speech with the words "Brothers and sisters of America!", thousands in the audience applauded continuously.
Self-Individualism - Seed Example: Swami Vivekananda taught a great lesson to the youth: "Take inspiration from others, but do not give up your individuality." He used the example of a seed to illustrate this. A seed needs air, soil, and water to grow, but it does not become air or soil. It simply uses them and becomes a 'tree' with its own personality. Similarly, today's youth should not blindly imitate others but choose their own path.
