Global Hindu Heritage Foundation and Dharma Jagruti Foundation are conducting Sanatana Dharma Summer classes for youth and adults for 12 months. These classes started on May 25th and will continue every Sunday until the end of August. On June 22, we conducted our class on Yoga and Meditation.

“If the mind falls asleep, awaken it. Then if it starts wandering, make it quiet. If you reach the state where there is neither sleep nor movement of mind, stay still in that, the natural (real) state.”– Ramana Maharshi
Paramahansa Yogananda recognized the difficulty and compared the controlling mind with impossible incidents as follows:
 “You may control a mad elephant;
You may shut the mouth of the bear and the tiger;
Ride the lion and play with the cobra;
By alchemy you may learn your livelihood;
You may wander through the universe incognito;
Make vassals of the gods; be ever youthful;
You may walk in water and live in fire;
But control of the mind is better and more difficult.”
If the mind is that difficult to control, what can be done to quell, still or silence the mind. Patanjali Yoga Sutras written sometime between 500 BCE and 400 BCE. It contains four chapters containing 195 Sutras (aphorisms). The whole book hinges on the second sutra “yogah citta-vá¹›tti-nirodhaḥ.”(“Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind”).  Yoga means of “joining the individual soul to the universal soul” or removing the barriers between the two souls to become one.

Students and Meditation
    Improved concentration– It leads to better grades, balanced blood pressure, decreased absenteeism and tardiness, improved interpersonal relations, and enhanced confidence level, sleep, relief from a headache, improved calmness and a sharper mind.
    Flexibility– Yet another advantage of practicing yoga regularly is the flexibility of the body. Stretching the muscles through yoga poses releases the lactic acid that builds up within your body preventing stiffness, pain, fatigue and tension that can really be painful at times. Stretching increases joint lubrication and stretches the soft tissues of your body. For students playing sports, yoga can decrease the risk of injury through increased range of motion and less fatigue.
