[GHHF] Udham Singh sacrificed his life fighting against injustice occurred in Jallianwala Bagh where British killed 1000 people.
A pledge made on the soil soaked in blood,Many heroes have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of our country. One of them was the brave Udham Singh who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. His life is a testament to his vow and dedication.
Udham Singh was born on December 26, 1899, in the village of Sunam in Punjab. His father was Tehal Singh. He lost his parents at an early age and grew up in an orphanage in Amritsar. He had a courageous and selfless nature from childhood.
It was April 13, 1919. In the city of Amritsar in Punjab, hundreds of innocent people, women and children gathered for a peaceful meeting in a garden called Jallianwala Bagh. To provide them with fresh water, a 19-year-old youth, Udham Singh, arrived there. Suddenly, without any warning, the British army, under the orders of Brigadier General Reginald Dyer, opened indiscriminate fire on the unarmed people. Since there was only one way into the garden, the people could not escape. More than 1,000 innocent people were killed in the fire (379 according to the British government's calculations) and more than 2,000 were injured. General Reginald Dyer was directly responsible for this terrible tragedy.
Udham Singh somehow survived the horrific incident. But seeing the hundreds of corpses, blood, and cries lying around, his heart broke. At that moment, he took the blood-soaked soil in his hands and solemnly vowed, "I will kill those responsible for this terrible famine! This soil, which has been spilt with the blood of innocent people, is a witness to my vow!" Notably, Sir Michael Francis O'Dwyer, who was then the Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab Province, not only condoned the massacre, but was also a major factor in the strict implementation of British rule in Punjab. Udham Singh believed that O'Dwyer was indirectly and administratively fully responsible for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Hence, he decided that his life's goal was to avenge that massacre.
To achieve his goal, Udham Singh learned to shoot a gun. He worked with the freedom fighters and revolutionary heroes of the time. In the process, he also served five years in prison. Even after his release from prison, he did not forget his vow. He swore by bathing in the sacred lake in front of the Golden Temple in Amritsar that he would not return to India until he killed O'Dwyer, who was living in London.
To achieve that goal, Udham Singh traveled to many countries. Obtaining a passport under the name "Ram Mohammed Singh Azad", he travelled through France, Switzerland and Austria, and finally reached London in 1934. He waited for 21 years, waiting for his target. Sometimes he had the opportunity to kill O'Dwyer, but he felt that the world needed a suitable platform to expose British atrocities. Finally, on 13 March 1940, Udham Singh learned that O'Dwyer was going to deliver a lecture at Caxton Hall in London. He thought it was the right time. He hid the weapon in a book, stuffed it into a revolver, and went to the meeting. Finding the right moment, he went up to O'Dwyer and fired two rounds. O'Dwyer died on the spot. After achieving his goal, Udham Singh did not even try to escape. He strongly believed that he had no regrets about what he had done, and that it was his responsibility. Even in court, he boldly declared, "I do not think what I did was wrong. I thought it was my responsibility to eliminate the perpetrators of the Jallianwala Bagh incident, and I did it. I am not afraid of death; this is my duty."
On July 31 of the same year, Udham Singh was hanged at Pentonville Jail in London. He even kissed the gallows like a hero. Udham Singh was a hero who taught society that "It is not enough to just set a goal; one must also have the courage to sacrifice one's life for the achievement of that goal." On the occasion of his death anniversary, let us pay tribute to that great man.
